Introducing Carmel Chiropractor Dr. Karen Bisesi

As a collegiate springboard diver I was badly injured when I was fixing the fulcrum of the board and accidentally fell onto the concrete from the 3 meter diving board. I was unable to move my neck or use my arm for 6 weeks despite all of the x-rays, exams, ultrasound, electric stimulation, injections and the expert trainers, therapists and orthopedic doctors I had seen. The waterpolo coach, who also happened to be a chiropractor, saw my injury and said " you should try seeing a chiropractor". At the time I was afraid and didn't like the idea of "getting my neck twisted". Finally, out of desperation I made an appointment with Dr. Schroeder which would soon change the path of my life.
Dr. Schroeder explained to me that the trauma of my fall had misaligned the C7 vertebrae in my neck which was compressing and irritating the nerve that went to my arm. He made a gentle adjustment (not a twist at all!) to my arm and my shoulder and immediately I felt a rush of blood going up my neck, into my ear and down my arm. I can still remember that feeling today. What was even more amazing to me was the fact that my daily headaches that I just "gotten used to" were totally gone. I couldn't believe it!!!! At this point, I felt I had to look into this "Chiropractic Thing". I had already been accepted to an excellent Physical Therapy program at USC but I decided I would take some time to investigate what Chiropractic was all about. To this day, I appreciate Dr. Schroeder saying " You should try seeing a Chiropractor" because that simple phrase gave me the hope and faith in the power of my own body to heal itself without surgery or injections, or pain killers.
I am originally from San Diego, California. I graduated from Poway High School and chose to go to Pepperdine University to study Sports Medicine. At the time, there were only 2 schools with this Major and Pepperdine also had a swim team so I started college there in 1985 at the age of 17. From Day 1, I worked as a student trainer where I developed a lot of skill in treatment and prevention of sports injuries. After graduating with a B.S. in Sports Medicine, I decided to apply to Chiropractic College. I worked in the Sports Medicine field for 2 years where I managed a multidisciplinary facility in San Diego. I was accepted to Palmer West College of Chiropractic in Sunnyvale, California. I got married in 1993 and finished my education at National College of Chiropractic in Chicago Illinois. I received my Doctorate in Chiropractic in December of 1995. We moved to Indianapolis in 1996 and I started as an associate doctor in Carmel, Indiana.
In 1998, I opened Indy Sports Chiropractic in order to put together a team of compassionate and skilled people that would deliver the most comprehensive, natural health care to our patients possible. Above all else, I wanted to treat my patients with respect at every step, because we feel that it is our purpose and duty to help them discover the power of your own body to heal. We treat people of all ages and all conditions, not just athletes. We really LISTEN and we honor the fact that you are UNIQUE. Some of our most rewarding experiences are when we treat children. My favorite is Sam, who told his mom that for his birthday he wanted ...."An adjustment from Dr. Karen." I love it!!!!!!!
Personally, I have three children of my own. They have been adjusted from birth. Nicholas is 7 years old and the twins (Jack and Luke) are 3 years old. Yes, I am busy but, " if you want something done....give it to a busy person," I always say. My husband, Jim, and I have been married for 13 years. Jim works for the Children's Museum and is our official "tech guy". We love to spend time boating and swimming with the kids or going to Fort Ben for pony and trail rides. Jim is a scuba diver and tropical fish enthusiast and I like to read and ride horses.
I get chiropractic adjustments weekly, no matter what. I really feel strongly that regular chiropractic adjustments prevent degeneration of the spine and improve your immunity. Considering how much trauma I have had, my x-rays are clear of disc or joint degeneration. I also get regular massage therapy to prevent overuse injuries like tendonitis. I also do Pilates which is a great way to get your core strength back after having a baby or a back injury. We now have a full Pilates studio My kids love to get adjusted and I even adjust our dog Adobe. Our family is working hard to eat more fruits and vegetables and less processed food. Please ask me about the book Body By God which gives excellent nutrition advise for busy people.
